I think they have raised a question that is on the mind of many people, and that I think the Nigerian media should have raised since it seemed like the president was too ill to discharge his responsibilities, and since the president refused to hand over to his vice the other time he went on vacation.

Interesting. Unfortunately, I found the report to be stale. Certain papers in Nigeria have been carrying news about Yar’Adua’s health. Which is why the Leadership paper is being sued by Yardy himself.

What I focused on was the reference to northeners and their concerns over possibly losing power to southerners (if Goodluck had to replace Yardy). Not to say that this concern is not true for some northerners, but I feel that the article was taking advantage of tribal tensions with absolutely no credible references. It was basically an unsupported speculation. You could do that. But the Economist does it and can get away with it? Not even a quote to a Nigerian political scientist or something.

Anyway, just my thoughts. Enjoy Easter!

I understand your issue with the Northener/Southerner stuff. But this is an issue that people have been talking about in Nigeria. Last year, in Ibadan, I remember talking to a university teacher who wished a Nigerian newspaper could do a full analysis of the possible scenario if the president were to die.

But I get your point about making unsubstantiated claims, they certainly could have done a better job.

Happy Easter to you and your family too!
