A New Book on China and Africa

By | November 28, 2007

Chris Alden, a senior lecture in the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics, has just written a book titled ‘China in Africa’. The book is published by Zed Books. I have not managed to get hold of the book but I plan to do so as soon as possible. The Economist’s review promises that it is a good read. You may have a look at it.

The review is very good. I have spent a lot of time talking with people about the China factor. It will be nice to read Alden’s book (if I ever have the time!).

I have heard some horror stories about China’s impact on Africa. From countries not limiting the environmentally destructive means by which minerals are taken from the earth, to rumors of Chinese simply paying hefty bribes to get the contract they want. Anyway, hopefully the relationship between China and its African partners will evolve over time to become a partnership that is mutually beneficial.

    Solo,

Thanks for dropping by, and for the comments. The China issue is one that always comes up in discussions. And it has largely been about the effect of China on Africa. What I like about this book – got this from the review – is that it mentions ways in which China’s relations with Africa is influencing China’s foreign policy. Kind of like one of those things you always could have thought about but never did. I still plan to get the book myself. I will do a review of it as soon as I get to read it.
