Nigerien Music

By | June 28, 2007

Ok Ishtar, I have got you some. Click here for some Touareg music. And here is a German website with information about Niger. Click on the audi tab and you will get some mp3 files of Nigerien music. I have been listening to the music and I like it… hope you do too.

Wow – what service you render Loomnie!! Concerning the artists, I went to a Mamar Kassey concert in Zinder, it must have been in 2000 or 2001. The music was nice but the concert was long and the songs were not that different from one another… My most vivid memory from the whole thing was my first exposure to the Nigerien (and probably other African as well) gesture of appreciation, involving walking up on the scene and gluing a bill (or a number of bills!) to the sweat of the artist’s forehead, often in a very sensual manner! I was also extremely surprised at how lightly all the girls were suddenly dressed; wearing mini pieces that I wouldn’t even dream on wearing in my liberal home country… πŸ™‚ As for gossip, Abacha’s son’s girlfriend was there at the time, gluing a LOT of bills to Kasseys forehead (and other parts of his body as well!).

Abdu Salaam is in fact a great guy. I have a CD with him at home, and there is a song of his that I love using when making short home videos and such. It’s got a very special musing tune; makes you want to fall asleep. True Nigerien tempo, in other words!!

    Thanks for the post!

Ishtar, I am glad you liked the post. Oh yea, that is the way we do things (I mean gluing money on people’s body parts. You have to get the words right, though. It is spraying. You spray someone with money). I even saw a home video of a party in Canada where people were spraying dollars.

About the skimpy clothes. Experience has thought me – and I hope you too – that so many things don’t fit into any stereotype. Take a walk into any clubhouse in remote parts of Nigeria and you would be surprised at how the girls dress. Oh yea, one shouldn’t forget the world’s oldest profession.
